Hysteroscopy

Hysteroscopy is a procedure that allows the doctor to look inside the uterus. A hysterscope is a thin telescope like device that is inserted through the vagina into the uterus. An image of the uterus is then projected onto a screen allowing the doctor to see inside. This procedure is used to diagnose and treat gynecologic issues such as abnormal uterine bleeding, polyps/fibroids and thickening of the endometrium. A tissue sample may also be obtained during the procedure.

Colposcopy

A colposcopy is performed when a Pap test result shows abnormal cellular changes to the cervix. During this procedure, a colposcope is used to magnify the view of the cervix allowing the doctor to see the area up to 60 times more closely. The doctor may choose to do a biopsy by removing a piece cervical tissue. This provides more information about the abnormal cells.

LEEP (Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure)

If you have an abnormal Pap/Colposcopy result, the doctor may want you to undergo the LEEP procedure. Abnormal cells of the cervix can be removed with LEEP. This allows new, healthy cells to grow.

LEEP uses a thin wire loop that acts like a scalpel. An electric current is passed through the loop, which cuts away a thin layer of the surface cells. The procedure should be done when you do not have your menstrual cycle so the doctor is better able to see the cervix. In most cases, LEEP is done in the office.

ESSURE

ESSURE is a proven permanent birth control procedure that works by placing soft, flexible inserts into the fallopian tubes creating a natural barrier against pregnancy. It is covered by most health insurance providers and when performed in a doctor’s office, depending on your specific plan, may only require a co-pay. The ESSURE is 98.83% effective and most women are typically able to go home within 45 minutes of having the procedure. The majority of women return to normal activities in less than one day.

Endometrial Ablation

Endometrial Ablation is a procedure to reduce excessive menstrual bleeding. The procedure destroys the lining of the uterus through the use of heat. In most cases, bleeding during your period will be reduced to moderate or light flow. While pregnancy can still occur, this therapy should not be used if you are not finished with childbearing, as pregnancies after the therapy can be dangerous for both fetus and mother. Most women can return to work and family commitments the day following the procedure.
